The Statue of Liberation Through Christ

The following inscription, engraved on a bronze plaque in 1903 was written and placed at the base of the Statue of Liberty. In its famous culminating lines, Lady Liberty says:

Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest – lost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

Lady Liberation’s theme inscription exalts the ministry of Christ. It reads as follows:

Give me your poor BREAKENHEARTED
Your CAPTURED, BLIND, AND BRUISED
Your huddled MULTITUDES yearning to be free;
The wretched LOST SOULS
from shore to shore,
Send these, the SICK, OPPRESSED, HOMELESS
The tempest LOST to Christ.
I lift the cross as a symbol
that CHRIST IS THE DOOR.

(John 8:32b, Luke 4:18; Romans 7:24; Acts10:28; 2 Corinthians 4:3; John 10:9
